Thousands of visitors will gather today in the Village and Port of Garachico to take part in one of the most genuine and traditional festivals on the Island
They began to be celebrated in the 17th century. It originated from a plague epidemic that, starting in the port of Garachico, spread to numerous municipalities. With the arrival of pilgrims at the hermitage of San Roque, the transfer of the Saint to the Church of Santa Ana in the heart of the Village takes place, where a religious service is held at noon.
At one o’clock in the afternoon, the popular pilgrimage of San Roque begins. The statue is accompanied to its hermitage by a band, carts, herds, beautifully adorned animals, musical ensembles, and groups singing traditional songs. At the same time, the fishermen of Garachico carry out the maritime pilgrimage, accompanying the Saint along the coast with their boats.
