The Villa of San Juan de la Rambla will celebrate this Sunday, 17 August, the first centenary of the granting of the title of Villa, awarded in 1925 by King Alfonso XIII, as a testament to his “royal appreciation for the people of San Juan de la Rambla for their growing agricultural development and their constant loyalty to the Monarchy”.
The main event of this commemoration is scheduled for 19:00 in the Rosario Oramas square of San Juan and will serve as a representation of everything that defines the Villa and how it has evolved over the past one hundred years, as specified by the Town Hall in a press release.
The historical narration will be undertaken by the beloved son José Antonio Oramas, and the official chronicler Pedro Ángel Gómez will present what has been accomplished regarding the centenary celebration to date. Attendees will enjoy moments of special significance that aspire to become a “historic milestone”.
Meanwhile, the danced poem ‘San Juan de la Rambla’, taken from the work ‘Vuelta a la Isla’ by Pedro García Cabrera, will be recited by Loly Armas and danced by the local choreographic group Titanium, along with the premiere of the play “Hace 100 años”, presented by the local groups La Chistera and La Alhóndiga.
However, the highlight of the day will be the grand premiere of the symphonic poem ‘From the Sea to the Summit’, which was composed by José Luis Peiró in honour of the centenary and will be performed jointly by the two local bands, the A. A. Alcaraván and the A. M. XIX de Marzo.
Among the speakers, the participation of the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, stands out, who, together with the mayor of San Juan, Juan Ramos, and the Councillor for Culture, Juan Siverio, will underscore the importance of this date for the area and the rest of the region.
The Town Hall specifies that Their Majesties the Kings hold the Honorary Presidency of the Centenary Commemorative Committee, which gives this celebration an even more significant character.
Therefore, they indicate, the office of His Majesty the King, through an official communication sent by the Head of the House, has conveyed the greetings and congratulations of Their Majesties to the entire people of San Juan de la Rambla. Although they will be unable to attend the institutional event due to scheduling conflicts, they have deeply appreciated the invitation and expressed their recognition of the municipality on this “historic anniversary”.
The Honorary Committee includes the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, the President of the Canary Islands Parliament, Astrid Pérez, the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, the President of the FECAM, María Brito, the Rector of the ULL, Francisco Javier García, the Bishop of the Nivariense Diocese, Eloy Alberto Santiago, and the mayor of San Juan, Juan Ramos.
The advisory committee, in turn, is composed of the beloved sons José Antonio Oramas and Esteban de León, the local chronicler Pedro Gómez, the educator José Antonio Falcón, the professor Josefa Dorta, the former director of the Canary Institute of Equality Isabel de Luis, the president of the A. C. Martín Rodríguez Julia Borges, the president of the A. C. Los Alzados Carmen Nieves Luis, the president of the Medianías Cooperative Manuel Reyes, the former president of the A. M. XIX de Marzo María de las Nieves Dorta, the director of the Titanium choreographic group Noemí Díaz, the former Councillors for Culture Iván García and José María Pérez, and the municipal employee Emeterio García.
