The socialists say it has “lots of slogans and propaganda, but zero real commitment to what defines us as a people.”

The PSOE of Lanzarote has “strongly condemned” the attack suffered at the archaeological site of Zonzamas, where one of the rock engravings has been found damaged by graffiti. For the socialists, this act not only constitutes an assault on the cultural heritage of the island but also exposes the “false nationalism” of Oswaldo Betancort and Coalición Canaria, which abandons what truly represents the identity of Lanzarote.

The insular secretary of the PSOE and Member of Congress, María Dolores Corujo, stated that “what happened in Zonzamas is the direct consequence of the neglect and lack of protection for heritage under Oswaldo Betancort’s management. That is the nationalism they practice: lots of slogans and propaganda, but zero real commitment to what defines us as a people.”

Corujo recalled that during the socialist mandate in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, procedures were initiated to hire a service for 24-hour surveillance in Zonzamas, aimed at ensuring the custody of the island’s most important archaeological site.

“That file has been ready for more than a year, but the current governing group of Coalición Canaria and the Popular Party has left it in a drawer. Today we have proof of what that irresponsibility means,” she emphasised.

“Those who wave the flag and fill their mouths speaking of identity are the same ones who have abandoned Lanzarote’s most valuable legacy. The attack on Zonzamas starkly portrays that hypocrisy: a false nationalism that does not protect or respect what is ours,” added the socialist leader.

According to the socialists, the PSOE of Lanzarote will demand that the Cabildo immediately reactivate the surveillance file and adopt the necessary measures to protect Zonzamas and the other sites on the island, “because defending Lanzarote starts with protecting its heritage.”
