Tenerife Council Maintains the Ban on Lighting Fires in Recreational Areas Due to Wildfire Risk
The Island Corporation establishes level 1 measures and permits access to the island’s trails and forest paths
Use of machinery that may cause sparks and the use of pyrotechnic materials in risk areas also remain prohibited
The Tenerife Council has implemented today (Tuesday 19) level 1 measures for wildfire prevention, which means that the ban on lighting fires in recreational and outdoor areas—including barbecues, bonfires, stoves, or gas cookers—is still in effect. The use of any machinery or tools that may produce sparks (such as brush cutters, welding equipment, spark-generating machines, or cutting tools) and any pyrotechnic materials in risk areas is also prohibited. Furthermore, it is forbidden to smoke in recreational areas, campsites, camping sites, paths, viewpoints, and other public infrastructure located in forested areas.
Activities that are permitted include access to paths and trails on the island, as well as forestry activities and hunting. However, the Council advises against entering or staying in forest areas of the island while the alert situation is in effect, and it urges heightened precautions throughout the island regarding any activities that may start fires. The restrictions associated with level 1 wildfire prevention measures will remain in place until the alert situation concludes.
This decision has been made considering the current weather conditions and the declaration of pre-alert due to high temperatures and warning of wildfire risk issued from 8:00 AM today by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government.
