The Insular Athletics Centre will host the second National Sports Technification Programme (PNTD) to be held in the archipelago in 2025, and the first of five programmes arriving in the islands in the coming months. Fuerteventura will hold a Combined Events PNTD on 23rd September.
The Spanish Athletics Federation has once again chosen the Canary Islands as the central hub for these sessions. They are scheduled for 23rd September and will feature the prominent national specialist in combined events, Ignacio Martínez Navarro. In addition, the participation of eight talented and promising Canarian athletes is yet to be confirmed.
The Combined Events sector is one of the strongest areas within the Canarian Athletics Federation. Indeed, athletes such as Paola Sarabia, Yanira Soto, Jonay Jordán, Javier Pérez, and Pablo Gámez have experienced international success with the Spanish national team.
It is worth noting that the Canary Islands won the bronze medal at the Spanish Combined Events Championship for Autonomous Federations held in June, hosted precisely by the island of Maxorata.
The PNTD: A Success for Athletics in the Canary Islands
According to the technical director of the Canarian Athletics Federation, Jonay Medina, it is a source of pride for the Canary Islands to host a programme of this magnitude. “It is a golden opportunity for the PNTD to be held here. Its aim is to continue learning and to highlight the great talents we possess. We are very grateful to the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation and the Higher Sports Council for choosing us to run the programme,” he stated.
The islands had not been selected for a National Sports Technification Programme (PNTD) in three years, aimed at the overall development of athletes in the under-16 and under-18 categories as they progress towards high performance.
In April, Tenerife and Gran Canaria hosted two PNTDs, one for middle-distance running and the other for hammer throw, respectively.
Up to four more PNTDs are anticipated in the archipelago. Dates and locations will be officially announced in the coming weeks. This is undoubtedly a significant development that fills the Canarian athletics community with pride and greatly contributes to its growth.
