Nearly 5,000 Athletes Benefit from Cabildo Grants for Travel to Official Competitions
The Minister for Sport, Yolanda Moliné, emphasises that the total amount allocated for this purpose exceeds €640,000, providing “significant support for our athletes to compete nationally and internationally”
The Cabildo de Tenerife, through its Sports department, provides grants aimed at assisting travel to national and international competitions for sports clubs, federations, and individual athletes from the island during the second half of 2024. The budget allocated for this initiative is €295,000, which adds to the €348,630 designated for the first half of 2024, allowing a total of 4,813 athletes to cover part of their travel expenses to official competitions during this period.
The focus of this grant scheme is specifically to cover accommodation, subsistence, and internal transport costs for attendance at official national or international competitions, such as championships in Spain, Europe, and the world.
The Minister for Sport, Yolanda Moliné, highlights that the total amount allocated to this grant scheme reaches €643,630 across two rounds, an increase of approximately 25% compared to 2023.
In the first half of the year (January to June 2024), 752 applications were submitted, of which 562 were approved and paid; while in the second half (July to December 2024), 782 applications were received, with 532 granted, all of which were paid out this August.
In terms of sports disciplines, the most heavily subsidised sports in both rounds have been rhythmic gymnastics, tennis, swimming, and athletics.
Yolanda Moliné states that “these grants provide significant assistance for our athletes to travel for international competitions, complementing the transport costs covered by the Government of the Canary Islands for flight tickets.” The Minister also emphasises that “we are talking about clubs and athletes who carry the name of Tenerife wherever they go, setting a high standard in their respective sports.”
The 2024 and 2025 grant calls have introduced a new feature of simplified documentation requirements to accelerate the administrative processing of the grants.
Regarding the 2025 call, the deadline for rectifying submitted applications for Travel Assistance between January 1 and May 31, 2025, has already closed. This has a financial allocation of €380,000, with nearly 600 applications received.
