Campaign of Hate on Lanzarote’s Playa Bastián Sparks Outrage and Calls for Unity

Corujo’s Concerns over Extremist Campaign at Playa Bastián

According to Corujo in her article, “recent days have witnessed an action that is as absurd as it is alarming. The far-right organisation Hazte Oír chose a beach on our island, Playa Bastián, to launch a campaign of hatred against the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, coinciding with a period of rest at the La Mareta residence.”

“It may seem like an anecdote, but it is not. It is part of a climate that has been deliberately cultivated for some time: noise, tension, and disinformation. We are not talking about an innocuous gesture, but rather an attempt to poison political life and normalise hatred as a means of doing politics,” the PSOE leader emphasises.

In this regard, the socialist leader recalls that “Lanzarote is not that. Our island is diverse, open, and compassionate. We have demonstrated at the ballot box that we do not want either hate speech or those who promote it. In the recent general elections, the Socialist Party was the most voted force in Lanzarote and in the Canaries. It was because the public chose rights over insults, respect over hatred, and coexistence over division.”

María Dolores Corujo believes that the fact the Prime Minister spends a few days at an official government residence should not scandalise anyone who minimally respects democracy.

“However, the PSOE national deputy warns that we see how even from institutions on the island, some are trying to capitalise on the noise. There have been ridiculous statements from leaders such as the President of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, or the island president of the People’s Party, who have fuelled this strategy of tension.”

“The question is: what do these attitudes contribute to Lanzarote? Nothing. They do not generate jobs, do not improve healthcare, do not alleviate the housing emergency, and do not solve the water crisis. They only wear us down and divide us,” Corujo concludes.

According to the PSOE leader in her article, “the truly concerning issue is not the umbrellas of Hazte Oír, but the advancement of intolerance disguised as freedom of expression,” warning that “when we normalise these messages, when we treat them as part of the landscape, we are opening the door for hatred to become routine.”

Finally, Corujo reminds us that “Lanzarote has too many real challenges to waste time on campaigns organised by those who only seek confrontation. Our duty as a society is to raise our voices and say loud and clear: Lanzarote is not hatred. Lanzarote is respect, democracy, and freedom.”
