MADRID/SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 20 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands will experience generally clear skies this Thursday, with occasional clouds along the northern coast of the mountainous islands, according to the prediction from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable, with highs potentially reaching 30ºC in the southern and western midlands of Gran Canaria, and possibly up to 34ºC in some local areas. In the other islands, local temperatures may also surpass 30ºC in the southern and western midlands.

In terms of wind, a moderate north-easterly breeze will blow, with stronger intervals along the southern-eastern and north-western slopes of the more elevated islands.

REST OF THE COUNTRY

Across Spain, a total of eight provinces will have active warnings for rain and storms this Thursday, with no alerts anticipated for high temperatures.

Specifically, Mallorca and Menorca will be under an orange warning (significant) for storms and rainfall of up to 50 litres per square metre (l/m²), while Ibiza and Formentera (Balearic Islands) as well as Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona (Catalonia) will be under yellow warnings for precipitation and storms.

Additionally, rain warnings are in place for Guipúzcoa and Biscay (Basque Country), the Foral Community of Navarre (Cantabrian slope of Navarre), and in Cantabria (Cantabrian coast).

The AEMET forecasts that a cold drop will maintain unstable conditions in the northern third of the peninsula and the Balearics this Thursday, featuring predominantly cloudy or overcast skies with widespread rainfall, particularly affecting coastal regions in the southeast of the peninsula.

It is expected that these conditions will be accompanied by thunderstorms, especially strong on the north-eastern coasts of Catalonia and notably in the Balearics, with a chance of very heavy rainfall. Persistent and locally strong showers are also anticipated in the eastern Cantabrian region.

Throughout the day, the intensity of rainfall will decrease, although significant cloud development is likely in the northern half and eastern third of the peninsula, which could lead to some showers in the Iberian range or in the extreme southeastern regions. The rest of the peninsula and the Canaries are expected to remain generally clear, apart from the northern parts of the more elevated islands where cloudy skies will prevail.

Furthermore, early morning fog patches may occur in the higher areas of the northern third and the extreme southeastern peninsula; high dust clouds are also expected in the Canaries.

On another note, maximum temperatures will drop in the southeastern peninsula, while increases are expected in the western third and some areas of the northern Mediterranean, remaining stable elsewhere. Only in the depressions of Andalusia will temperatures exceed 35ºC.

Minimum temperatures will decrease moderately in the eastern third of the peninsula, with increases expected in the upper Ebro region and little change elsewhere. Minimums are not anticipated to drop below 20ºC in Mediterranean coastal areas and regions of the Guadalquivir.

Finally, a moderate trade wind will blow with strong intervals in the Canaries. The Tramontana wind will also be moderate, with possible strong gusts in the Ampurdán region, as well as the westerly winds in the Cantabrian Sea and the southern coastal areas of the peninsula, northerly winds along the Galician Atlantic coast, and the Cierzo-Mistral in the Ebro and Balearics, with possible very strong gusts in the lower Ebro. Weak winds from the north and west are expected elsewhere.
