The Plenary of the Lanzarote Cabildo unanimously approved the foundations of pioneering grants aimed at conserving the wine-growing landscape of La Geria this Wednesday.

The island president, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted that this line of financial support—which combines funds from the Government of the Canary Islands and its own resources, totalling €800,000—is a “key step in ensuring the future of the landscape and those who work it.”

The grants will be directed at viticulturists who maintain traditional cultivation methods, such as the use of pits and rofe, for at least three years.

Fair Funding for POSEI

On another note, the Lanzarote Cabildo urged the Spanish Government to include the full national contribution to POSEI in the General State Budget, which is currently largely borne by the Government of the Canary Islands.

Councillor Samuel Martín emphasized that the Canary Islands institutions should not bear a responsibility that also falls on the State and the EU.

Furthermore, Brussels is called upon to update the financial details of the programme post-2027, as production costs have risen by 50% since 2007 whilst the grants remain frozen.
