The Cabildo of Lanzarote pays tribute to Roberto Pérez Toledo with A Basic Manual of Sign Language for Breaking Hearts
The Cabildo of Lanzarote will present the play A Basic Manual of Sign Language for Breaking Hearts on Saturday, 27 September 2025, at the Teatro Víctor Fernández Gopar “El Salinero”. This is the first theatrical work by the Lanzarote filmmaker Roberto Pérez Toledo, who passed away in 2022.
This production is a tribute to his legacy and artistic contributions, following its premiere at the Teatro María Guerrero in Madrid, produced by the National Dramatic Centre, just days before his death.
A Story of Love, Tenderness and Discovery
The play tells the story of Lucho, a young deaf man, and Jaime, who share the discovery of love and sign language in a wintery Madrid.
Through humour, tenderness, and naturalness, the narrative explores the fragility of emotions, the contradictions of desire, and the authenticity of communication.
As highlighted by Jesús Machín Tavío, Cultural Councillor of the Cabildo, “this performance is an invitation to the public to share the memory of a Lanzarote creator who managed to project the sensitivity of our island to the world, and who we now remember on stage as part of our shared cultural heritage”.
A Legacy that Transcends Borders
Premiered in January 2022, this production fuses audiovisual creation and theatricality, reinforcing Roberto Pérez Toledo’s commitment to an inclusive and diverse narrative.
The performance in Lanzarote serves as a living memorial that strengthens the island’s connection with the work of its artists.
