The traditional sport has once again taken centre stage at the patron saint festivities in Arrecife. The Mini Wooden Bola Canaria Tournament of San Ginés, organised by the Seniors’ Area of the Town Hall, concluded this week with the participation of over a hundred players and the crowning of teams Las Atrevidas and San Ginés as winners in the female and male categories, respectively.

The competition was held from Monday to Wednesday at the courts located in front of the Civic Centre in the San Francisco Javier neighbourhood, a usual venue for such events, which will soon host another major competition: the XXIV Wooden Bola Canaria Tournament for Grandparents of Conejeros, promoted by the Cabildo of Lanzarote in collaboration with various town halls on the island.

The Mini Tournament of San Ginés brought together a total of 21 teams, twelve in the male category and nine in the female category, who participated in three intense days of play and camaraderie.

In the men’s category, the victory went to the team San Ginés, while the second and third places were taken by Puente de las Bolas and Democracia, respectively. In the female category, Las Atrevidas claimed victory, followed by Las Especiales in second place and Las Conejeras in third.

The festive atmosphere marked the course of the matches, where precision, strategy, and skill highlighted the enduring appeal of this traditional sport, deeply rooted in Lanzarote, with substantial participation from the elderly.

Appreciation from the Organisers

The Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Festivals of Arrecife, Echedey Eugenio, and the Councillor for Seniors, Rosmen Quevedo, were present during the tournament celebrations and expressed their gratitude to all participants for their involvement and enthusiasm throughout the event.

Both councillors highlighted the importance of maintaining such competitions within the festival programme, not only for their sporting aspect but also for the social component they represent. They remarked that the wooden bola canaria is a discipline that promotes togetherness, reinforces tradition, and contributes to the well-being of those who participate.
