Canary Islands Government Issues Coastal Alert

The Government of the Canary Islands has updated the pre-alert situation regarding coastal phenomena for the western islands and Gran Canaria, effective from 08:00 on Friday, 22 August.

In a statement, the regional executive indicated that this decision considers information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other available sources, in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena in the Canary Islands (PEFMA).

Affected Areas

The situation affects the western and southern coasts of La Palma and Gran Canaria, as well as the eastern, southern, and western coastlines of El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife.

Forecast Details

Forecasts predict swells from the south and southwest, reaching heights of 1-2 metres, alongside spring tides due to the new moon. Winds will favour slight waves with localised areas of rough seas, increasing to rough seas by Sunday.

Tide Timings

Tide peaks are expected as follows:

  • Friday 22: 13:30 – 13:45
  • Saturday 23: 01:45 – 02:10 and 14:00 – 14:20
  • Sunday 24: 02:20 – 02:40 and 14:35 – 14:55

The Canary Islands government urges the public to adhere to the self-protection advice provided by the General Directorate of Emergencies.
