Blue Dragons Sighted on Lanzarote’s La Cantería Beach

A reader of La Voz de Lanzarote reported on Thursday, 21st August, the presence of blue dragons at La Cantería beach in Órzola. This is not the first time blue dragons have been spotted on the island during this summer season. In recent weeks, multiple sightings have occurred at various locations along the Lanzarote coastline, coinciding with favourable oceanic conditions for their arrival.

Although their appearance is fascinating, experts remind us that this species can deliver painful stings, as they feed on stinging organisms like the Portuguese man o’ war and retain a portion of their venom. Bathers are therefore advised not to handle them if encountered on the shore.

About the Blue Dragon

The blue dragon, also known as the Atlantic slug, is a venomous species that inhabits tropical and temperate waters around the globe.

According to the information website of the Government of the Canary Islands, the blue dragon is a venomous creature that causes irritations upon contact, similar to those triggered by a jellyfish. This mollusc displays a blue and silver hue, growing up to four centimetres in length. It is hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female sexual organs, though it cannot self-fertilize and must mate with another specimen to reproduce.
