The Permanent Tagoror of Cuna del Alma, comprising numerous ecological and social groups from Tenerife, has called for a new protest against the Cuna del Alma tourist mega-project. The demonstration is set to take place at Puertito de Adeje on Friday, 29 August, at 11:30 AM, according to a statement issued by Comisiones Obreras Canarias (CCOO) on Thursday.

The groups are demanding, on one hand, “the immediate and definitive cessation of works at Cuna del Alma, the expropriation of the rustic land of the Partial Plan Sector 06-El Puertito”, and on the other hand, “the creation of the Site Museum of the History and Nature of Tenerife”.

The union aims to express its support and stance against the mega-project, which seeks to build 420 luxury villas in Puertito de Adeje, as it “represents an exhausted tourism model that drives the working population from their homes, degrades our territory, and perpetuates labour precariousness in the sector”, the statement adds.

Furthermore, CCOO advocates that “another kind of tourism is possible—a tourism that respects Canary biodiversity, is sustainable, and yields social and economic improvements for those of us living in the Canaries”.

The organisation reminds us that it has been denouncing the current tourism model for years, which “instead of ensuring well-being, has only brought low wages, precarious contracts, saturation of public services, and a severe housing crisis”.

CCOO firmly believes that the Canaries hold “enormous potential in areas such as blue economy, renewable energies, or circular economy, sectors in which decisive investment has yet to be made and that could ensure a just and sustainable development for our population”, it concludes.
