Car Free Day in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: when it is and what it involves

The Santa Cruz City Council will promote the celebration of the traditional European Mobility Week, under the slogan “Mobility for All,” with a key event on 21st September (Car Free Day), featuring various activities aimed at both children and the general public.

The council has noted that the capital’s commitment to Mobility and the celebration of this European week aims to encourage a shift towards active mobility, public transport, and other clean and smart transport solutions.

“We support and renew our interest in disseminating the benefits of using sustainable transport modes, with more towns and cities joining this campaign that Europe promotes for sustainable urban mobility each year,” stated the City Council.

During the week from 16th to 21st September, leading up to Car Free Day, various activities will be organised to promote public transport and the reclamation of spaces for pedestrians and cyclists.

The City Council aims to contribute to this edition with a series of innovative, engaging, and safe activities for citizens, while also focusing on raising awareness and promoting understanding.

OBJECTIVES

Among the objectives for this European Mobility Week is to raise public awareness through information and workshops, encouraging a more moderate use of private vehicles.

This will highlight the benefits of using public transport, electric personal mobility vehicles, and bicycles, while promoting the occupation of public space by citizens, temporarily displacing the use of private cars (Car Free Day). It will also raise awareness of the importance of creating a more livable and healthy city by reducing emissions and noise.

Additionally, the aim is to foster ecological awareness among citizens, contributing to the care of individuals and the environment. The City Council’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Strategy will be introduced, and a technical seminar will be held to discuss urban mobility topics, focusing on raising awareness of Universal Accessibility in urban design and transport.
