Dispute Erupts Over I Torneo Ciudad de Arrecife 3×3 Amid False Claims by Opposition Councillor

Canarias3x3.com, the organiser of the I Torneo Ciudad de Arrecife 3×3 Memorial Marcial Martín Rodríguez, wishes to address the press release sent to media outlets by the Arrecife PSOE, which once again highlights the opposition councillor, Roy González, using any means, even based on falsehoods, to attempt to damage the governing body.

González has apologised to the family despite never having approached the Ciudad Deportiva pavilion, let alone exchanged any words with them. He extends his apologies to a grateful family for the tournament’s tribute, unaware of the ongoing issues plaguing the socialist councillor.

Prior to the tournament, González reacted to a publication from a capital-based club that derided the tournament’s presentation on the basis of lies, even while being aware of their inaccuracy.

Criticism of the Mayor and Councillor of Sport

On Sunday, he criticised, in a PSOE statement, that “the mayor, Yonathan de León, and the Councillor for Sports, Eli Merino, have chosen to engrave their faces on the trophies.” This accusation is yet another untruth from a councillor who has neither attended the tournament nor spoken to the family or consulted with the organisers. In his pursuit of “anything goes” on social media, Roy González appears out of touch with reality. The company responsible for the trophies delivered them to the pavilion on Sunday morning, unilaterally and without the knowledge of the council or the organisers. Having collaborated previously, the company informed “on site” that it had decided to experiment with new designs for the trophies, incorporating photographs taken from the tournament presentation. The organisers, always prioritising the participants, decided to present the trophies without delay, putting the importance of basketball above the aesthetics of the awards distributed. The opposition councillor from PSOE entirely overlooks, for instance, the diplomas awarded to each participant in the inclusive basketball event, as well as the plaque presented to the family of Marcial Martín Rodríguez, demonstrating once again that his sole focus is on criticising the ruling government of Arrecife, even when it bears no relation to the issues at hand.

Background on Roy González

Roy González, who served as the Councillor for Sports in Arrecife until 18 November 2021 before becoming a PSOE advisor at the Cabildo the following January, is now an opposition councillor in this legislature. He is entitled to voice any criticism he sees fit, but he should not spread falsehoods to the public. “Not everything is acceptable for garnering a like on social media,” states the opposition councillor, despite having posted several items based solely on lies.

It is noteworthy that, contrary to Roy González’s desires, the I Torneo 3×3 Ciudad de Arrecife Memorial Marcial Martín Rodríguez has been a resounding success. The tournament saw participation from nearly all basketball teams from Arrecife and the island, with a significant emphasis on inclusive basketball, and was a heartfelt and well-deserved tribute to the family of Marcial Martín Rodríguez and island basketball, setting a precedent. Not everything is permissible, neither in social media nor in politics.
