A man in his 30s tragically passed away on Sunday afternoon, 24 August, after being pulled from the water in the Los Charcones area of the Lanzarote municipality of Yaiza, showing clear signs of drowning.
The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Canary Islands Government received an alert at 17:33, when a call reported that several people were retrieving a swimmer who was in cardiac arrest.
In response, CECOES activated the necessary emergency resources to address the situation. The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) dispatched a medical ambulance and a basic life support unit, as well as requesting assistance from the Local Police of Yaiza, the Civil Guard, and firefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium.
Extended Resuscitation Efforts
According to SUC reports, bystanders began basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers before the medical teams arrived. Upon arrival, the emergency professionals took over with advanced resuscitation protocols, employing specialised techniques and using the equipment available in the medical ambulance.
Despite extensive and prolonged efforts to revive the victim, healthcare personnel ultimately confirmed his death at the scene.
Local Police and the Civil Guard were tasked with securing the area and carrying out the necessary proceedings, while firefighters from the Southern Park, alerted by the Central Park, also attended the scene to assist with land rescue operations and coordinate with the helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES).
The Security and Emergency Consortium’s report indicated that once it was confirmed that medical staff were performing resuscitation, their efforts focused on assisting with the stretcher placement and subsequent evacuation of the injured party. After it was confirmed that no further assistance was required, the personnel returned to their base.
