The XIX Edition of the Diego Pérez Traditional Harvest Gathering
Yesterday morning, the La Corona area in the highlands of Los Realejos hosted the XIX edition of the Diego Pérez Traditional Harvest Gathering. This event brought together harvesters from the Icod el Alto region for a day dedicated to promoting cereal and reminiscing about the ancestral practices associated with its cultivation.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Rural Development of Los Realejos and the Cereal Association of Tenerife (Acete), with support from the Cabildo and Fundación Tenerife Rural. Additional contributions came from the Equestrian Sports Club La Trilla, the group La Senda del Bentor, the Rambla de Castro Nature Classroom, the Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje 2025 Festival Committee, and the senior associations Ramblas de Castro and Icod de los Trigos.
The Los Realejos Town Council highlights the significance of cereal in the municipality’s agricultural landscape, particularly in the Icod el Alto area, which accounts for “half of the cereal production on the island.” This underscores the importance of continuing to promote such initiatives to preserve ancestral culture.
Event Activities
In addition to the traditional harvesting demonstrations, which included the creation of ‘mollos’, mule loading, and a picnic for the participants, the gathering also hosted another edition of the parallel Cereal Route. This was coordinated and directed by the Rambla de Castro Nature Classroom and the La Senda del Bentor group.
