SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 25 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The ‘Preventive School’ of the Cabildo of Tenerife, a pioneering initiative promoting training and education for the prevention of various diseases, has already carried out three out of the six planned actions for this year, bringing together approximately 1,500 professional participants from different islands of the archipelago.

This initiative is driven by the Department of Education for Prevention in collaboration with the School of Health and Social Services of the Canary Islands (ESSSCAN), which is part of the Department of Health of the Canary Islands Government.

Among the activities held are the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Obesity and Management of Diabetes by Patients, Families, and the Community’, the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Behavioural Addictions or Substance Use’, and the ‘Islander Day for the Prevention of Addictions in Tenerife’, which has become its most attended event with over a thousand professionals from all the islands.

Juan Acosta, the Councillor for Education for Prevention at the Cabildo of Tenerife, emphasises that “prevention cannot be understood without visibility, awareness, training, or education. These events not only train professionals but also serve as powerful platforms to raise public awareness about the main health challenges we face in the Canary Islands.”

Indeed, he indicates that they have become true forums for dialogue and reflection where professionals from various disciplines and interested citizens come together to work towards a common goal: improving the health of our people.

The Cabildo highlights in a statement that the ‘Preventive School’ is a dynamic and evolving project that addresses various important public health issues each year.

It consists of two main formats: the seminar format, which offers high-level theoretical content delivered by leading professionals in the Canary Islands, and the workshop format, with a smaller capacity that is more practical and dynamic, encouraging interaction and direct application of the acquired knowledge.

All activities are free and aimed at all professionals and interested citizens, accredited and recognised by the Teacher Improvement Service of the Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sport of the Canary Islands Government, and by the Canary Commission for Accreditation of Continuing Education in Health Professions of the Canarian Health Service, ensuring a high academic standard and the participation of leading experts in each subject.

UPCOMING ACTIONS

This edition continues with new actions scheduled for 17 September with the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections’, on 8 and 9 October with the ‘Islander Day for the Prevention of Mental Health Disorders’, and on 16 October with the ‘Workshop for the Prevention of Mental Health Disorders’. All these sessions respond to the current issues related to the increasing cases of anxiety, depression, and sexually transmitted infections, especially among young people and the elderly.

Looking ahead to 2026, the ‘Preventive School’ is working on organising new events such as the ‘Islander Day for Cancer Prevention’ and the ‘Islander Day for Chronic, Emerging, and Rare Diseases’, with the firm aim of raising awareness, educating, and promoting a culture of prevention across all areas of society.
