These public buildings provide social services for the elderly across the municipality
The Department of Works, Infrastructure and Accessibility of La Laguna Town Hall is undertaking renovations at the Acaymo Day Centre and the Dos Hermanos Citizen Centre in Punta del Hidalgo. These facilities are key to providing social support for the elderly in the municipality and required several repairs, modernisation efforts, and refurbishment.
The Councillor responsible for this department, Ángel Chinea, emphasised that “these actions have been coordinated in advance with the Social Welfare and Quality of Life Department of the Town Hall, which manages these facilities and provides excellent services for this community, promoting active ageing and combating the risks of unwanted loneliness, among other issues.”
Councillor Chinea explained that renovations at the Acaymo Centre include work in various areas of the main building and on the accessible roof. This involves comprehensive waterproofing of the terrace to prevent leakages during rainy periods. The existing elevator, which was out of service, has also been repaired, and plans are in place to install a roof over the access ramp in the coming months.
Meanwhile, at the Dos Hermanos Punta del Hidalgo Centre, walls have been restored, interior damp issues have been addressed, the perimeter fencing has been replaced, bathrooms updated, new blind systems installed, and the last layer of paint on the building has been refreshed, addressing requests made directly by users.
Currently, the Dos Hermanos Punta del Hidalgo Centre serves as a community hub where elderly associations regularly conduct their activities. However, La Laguna Town Hall is working to convert it into a new day centre for the local Corporation, thereby enhancing its service offerings.
These facilities will promote methods and tools to improve cognitive and physical skills for attendees and will host various activities to expand leisure options for this demographic.
