At the request of the Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, the President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, and the Councillor for Water, Domingo Cejas, attended a technical-political meeting in Yaiza on Tuesday. This gathering followed complaints from the mayor regarding the lack of information about the start date of the works and the schedule that local residents and restaurateurs from the coastal village have been desperately seeking.
Urgent Call for Information
Óscar Noda reported that “the Cabildo now acknowledges the urgency to justify the million euros obtained from the State for the project’s execution before December 14.” Last January, the mayor had already warned about the tight timeframe for meeting the deadline. Regardless, Yaiza has compiled all expenses related to project oversight and cost updates, in addition to processing the necessary sectoral permits.
Proposals for Efficient Execution
The mayor again urged the Cabildo for a detailed timeline of the works and timely communication with the community, suggesting a meeting on September 9 to outline a plan that would minimise disruptions. “We also proposed carrying out the connection works to allow households to link to the sewage system without needing further excavations,” he stated. Óscar Noda additionally requested that the Cabildo take advantage of the sewer works in El Golfo to replace the deteriorating supply network pipes. He emphasised that “failing to inform the Ayuntamiento of the execution steps is not only an institutional disloyalty but also neglecting the fact that the project was drafted by Yaiza.”
