The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the contracting company, UTE Tiagua-Horinsa, have signed the formal agreement that will enable the commencement of sanitation works in the coastal town of El Golfo, located in the municipality of Yaiza.
Project Overview
The project, awarded for a sum of €1.4 million and with an execution period of 10 months, includes the installation of a wastewater treatment plant (EDAR), the construction of a sanitation network, and a system for storing and reusing treated water. This is a long-awaited initiative that had been stalled for years, but the current administration, led by Oswaldo Betancort, has managed to set it in motion in record time.
Government’s Commitment
The president of the Cabildo and the Lanzarote Water Consortium, Oswaldo Betancort, stated, “Today, we take a historic step that unlocks a project which has been bogged down for years and which was a rightful demand from the residents of El Golfo. This administration pledged to clear the way for it, and we have delivered. The signing of this agreement guarantees that work will commence, and the transformation of the town is now a reality. We have honoured our commitment and secured public investment to ensure we do not lose state funding for this project, which originates from an agreement from 2017, and whose deadline is December of this year.”
Local Authority’s Efforts
Meanwhile, the councillor for Water and vice-president of the Water Consortium, Domingo Cejas, emphasised the efforts made to reach this point, asserting, “Today marks the beginning of the execution period for a strategic project that will ensure a significant improvement in the quality of life for residents and in the environmental sustainability of El Golfo. The technical team of the Consortium has worked professionally to make this signing possible and to ensure that the inaction of the previous government does not adversely affect the residents of El Golfo. Renouncing this project was never an option for the current insular government.”
Official Start of Works
A formal agreement constitutes the official acceptance that the contractor may commence the works, confirming that the location aligns with the project outlined for its execution and marking the initiation of the contractual deadline for implementation.
With this document, the sanitation project for El Golfo officially begins after years of delay.
