The Mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba, insists on clarifying to the public that “there have been no detected discharges in Punta Mujeres. This is a natural phenomenon of algal accumulation, which poses no health risk to residents.”
Technical Analysis and Findings
Following an investigation into discharge complaints made by residents, the Department of Health, in partnership with the Water Consortium of the Cabildo, confirms that the cause is a proliferation of microalgae.
The Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) of Haría, through the Department of Health and in coordination with the Water Consortium of Lanzarote, has addressed recent complaints from the public regarding sea discharges and strong odours in the Punta Mujeres area.
After a technical inspection and subsequent analyses carried out in the affected vicinity, it has been determined that the reported episodes are not due to wastewater discharges or failures in the sewage network. The cause has been attributed to the proliferation of microalgae, a natural phenomenon that can occur under certain environmental conditions.
Continued Monitoring
Mayor Alfredo Villalba reiterates, “We wish to clarify to the public that no discharges have been detected in Punta Mujeres. This is a natural phenomenon of algal accumulation, which poses no health risk to residents.”
Meanwhile, the Councillor for Health, Marcos Lemes, stated, “Following the analyses conducted, we can confirm that this is not related to wastewater or sewage discharges.”
“The Town Hall will continue to monitor the situation closely and will keep working to ensure our coasts remain clean and safe,” concluded the councillor.
