Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Records Decrease in Crime Rates
Significant Reduction in Conventional Crime
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has seen a 1.9% decrease in conventional crime during the first half of 2025, recording a total of 7,871 crimes—151 fewer than in the same period last year. This marks the lowest crime rate among the ten most populated municipalities in Spain, as reported by the city council of the Gran Canaria capital.
City Officials Acknowledge Collaborative Efforts
“These figures further confirm that our city remains one of the safest major cities in Spain, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Local Police, the National Police, and community collaboration,” stated Josué Íñiguez, the councillor for Security, Coexistence, and Culture, in a press release.
Crime Statistics Overview
The data comes from the Crime Balance published by the Ministry of the Interior, which highlighted significant decreases in various crime categories, such as burglary, which dropped to a total of 114 incidents.
“This represents a decrease of 30.9% compared to the first six months of the previous year, positioning Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as the city with the lowest number of home burglaries per 1,000 inhabitants, with a rate of 0.29 cases, compared to Palma’s 0.33 and Zaragoza’s 0.37,” he detailed.
Other crime types that have seen reductions include drug trafficking, down by 41.1%, vehicle thefts, which fell by 32.6%, and petty thefts, reduced by 5%.
Crime Rates Compared to Other Major Cities
When it comes to conventional crime rates per 1,000 inhabitants, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria continues to be the second most populated city in the country with the lowest rate, at 20.6 criminal offences per 1,000 inhabitants, only surpassed by Zaragoza with 16.6.
This rate is significantly lower than other major cities such as Barcelona (44.1), Palma (32.6), Valencia (31.2), Seville (29.3), Madrid (28.6), Bilbao (26.5), and Málaga (24.3).
