Environmental and Sports Compatibility in Fuerteventura
The Environmental and Hunting Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura has assured the compatibility of sports and conservation in various sporting events held on the island, including competitions involving motor vehicles, cyclists, and foot races.
In a statement, the Insular Corporation indicated that each event serves not only as a sporting occasion but also as an opportunity to demonstrate that it is possible to enjoy the territory while respecting and preserving its natural wealth.
So far this year, the Department has processed a total of 27 applications related to sporting events.
Technical Reports and Environmental Assessments
To enable these activities, technical reports are prepared based on the relevant regulations, ensuring the viability of the routes. These reports assess potential impacts on flora, fauna, and protected areas, and establish measures that ensure compatibility between sport and conservation.
Notable among these measures are the protection of species during breeding seasons, regulation of speed in sensitive sections, noise control in areas of natural value, proper route signage, and waste management both during and after the events.
Additionally, a maintenance plan is required to restore the various routes in case of deterioration, always under the supervision of environmental agents.
Commitment to Continuous Improvement
While minor incidents have occasionally been noted, the most important aspect is that there are mechanisms for monitoring and continuous improvement that reinforce the commitment of organisers and participants each year.
