Cancellation of Punta del Hidalgo – Bajamar Swimming Event Due to Adverse Weather Conditions

The Punta del Hidalgo – Bajamar Swimming Event seems doomed to miss its twentieth anniversary. The sporting event, scheduled for Saturday, 30th August, has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

Third Cancellation This Summer

This marks the third suspension of the event this summer, all of which were due to weather alerts. Initially set for 26th July, a heatwave during that period and a maximum alert declaration across the archipelago for high temperatures led to its first postponement to 9th August.

Consequences of Extreme Heat

The heat also prevented the swimming competition from going ahead that week, prompting the organisers and the Town Hall of La Laguna to delay the event to this Saturday. However, it is now the waves that have caused the cancellation.

Refund of Registration Fees

As reported by the Sports Department of La Laguna, “due to the wave conditions at the start point, in the finish area, and along the planned route, it will not be possible to hold the Bajamar – La Punta Swimming Event”.

The decision was made after receiving an “assessment from the water safety services“, convened at 12:00, in coordination with GEAS, who “advised against holding the competition given the current sea conditions”.

These conditions are reported to be “more adverse than forecasts from Thursday and Friday”, and moreover, “there is no expectation of improvement throughout the day“, concluded the Sports Department, announcing that “full refunds of the registration fees will be issued to all participants.”
