What is the Fiesta del Motín in Aranjuez?
The Fiesta del Motín in Aranjuez is a popular festival celebrated since 1981 in the Spanish city of Aranjuez, commemorating the historical event known as the Motín de Aranjuez, which took place in March 1808.
Each year, at the beginning of September, scenes from the mutiny, based on the National Episodes by Pérez Galdós, are enacted throughout the neighbourhoods of Aranjuez.
The festival was declared a National Tourist Interest Festival in 1990 and an International Tourist Interest Festival in 2014.
How is this festival celebrated?
Each September, locals dressed in period costumes stroll through the streets of Aranjuez, illuminated by the torches they carry, accompanied by the sound of drumming.
The festivities include various events, featuring large musical performances, artisan markets, and bullfighting shows:
Assault on the Godoy Palace:
With the cry of “Down with Godoy!”, a group of individuals climbs to the windows of the ‘Príncipe De La Paz’ palace (now an educational institution) using ladders and ropes. This symbolically represents the assault on the palace, with a firework display commemorating the burning of Manuel Godoy’s residence.
Appointment of the Head Mutineer:
Before the festivities commence, the Aranjuez Town Hall bestows the title of Head Mutineer on a notable individual or entity, who is required to deliver a speech prior to the performance.
Representation of the mutiny:
Around 150 residents of Aranjuez expertly enact the events of 1808 through dialogues, dances, and music.
Pirate Descent on the Tagus:
Locals descend the Tagus River in uniquely crafted and amusing boats made by them, from the Castle Bridge to the Barcas Bridge. These boats symbolically represent societal issues.
Origins of the Fiesta del Motín de Aranjuez
This festival dates back to the uprising of 2nd May 1808 that occurred in Madrid, spurred by popular protests against the political uncertainty following the mutiny in Aranjuez.
It represented a social explosion against the established order in Spain, marked by the surprise assault on Manuel Godoy’s residence (the Prime Minister under King Charles IV) by local residents. This historic event signalled the beginning of the decline of the Napoleonic Empire.
