Canary Islands Set Tourism Record with 9 Million Visitors in Seven Months

The archipelago has set a record, welcoming 9 million foreign tourists and generating a total expenditure of €14 billion in the first seven months of the year.

Canary Islands received a total of 1,231,090 international tourists in July, marking a 6.02% increase compared to the same month last year. These visitors spent €2.22 billion, a rise of 14.1%, according to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

This figure represents the highest number of international tourist arrivals and the most substantial expenditure in any July since records began.

On average, each tourist spent €218 per day during July, reflecting a 5.38% increase over the previous year, and stayed an average of 8.25 days in the Canary Islands.

Overall, the average spend per person reached €1,803, which is an increase of 7.64% compared to July of the previous year.

In total, 9,071,195 tourists have visited the Canary Islands from January to July, representing a rise of 4.27%, with an accumulated expenditure of €14.09 billion (+8.23%).

Regionally, the most visited area was the Balearic Islands, accounting for 23.28% of the total international tourists arriving in the country, followed by Catalonia (21.34%) and Andalusia (13.98%).

Nationally, total expenditure by international tourists up to July amounted to €76.07 billion, indicating an increase of 7.2% compared to the same period in 2024.

In terms of international arrivals to Spain in the first seven months of 2025, the figure surpassed 55.5 million, with growth of 4.1% compared to the corresponding period last year.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, these figures reflect a sustained upward trend in international visitor spending, which has outpaced arrivals, although growth in arrivals has moderated over the last three months.

In the first seven months of 2025, the United Kingdom was the country with the highest accumulated spending (17.6% of the total), followed by Germany (11.7%) and France (8.1%). Meanwhile, the Autonomous Communities with the highest accumulated expenditure were the Canary Islands (18.5% of the total), Catalonia (18.2%), and the Balearic Islands (15.3%).

In terms of visitors, the main source countries in the first seven months of the year were the United Kingdom (with nearly 11 million visitors, an increase of 4.3% compared to the same period in 2024); France (over 7.1 million visitors, a rise of 1.7%), and Germany (over 6.9 million visitors, up 1.6%).

The primary destinations for the accumulated year were Catalonia (11.6 million tourists, a rise of 1.1%); the Canary Islands (9.1 million, an increase of 4.3%), and the Balearic Islands (9 million, a 3.2% increase).

SPENDING CONTINUES TO RISE

In July alone, the increase in spending by international tourists was 4.5 percentage points higher than the rise in the number of foreign visitors. Specifically, that month Spain welcomed 11 million international tourists, resulting in a total expenditure exceeding €16.45 billion. Compared to the same month last year, visitor arrivals rose by 1.6%, while total spending increased by 6.1%.

During this month, each tourist spent an average of €1,493, representing a 4.4% increase compared to July of the previous year. The average daily spend of visitors was €210, with a year-on-year increase of 6.9%.

Moreover, the majority of tourist stays ranged from four to seven nights, totalling nearly 5.3 million stays, with a 1.7% increase year-on-year.

In July, the United Kingdom remained the largest source of visitors, with over 2 million tourists contributing €2.9 billion to Spain’s economy.

Following were tourists from France, with 1.5 million visitors and a spend of €1.465 billion; Germany, with 1.1 million tourists and an expenditure of €1.575 billion; and the United States, with over half a million visitors generating €1.174 billion in spending.

BALEARIC ISLANDS, TOP DESTINATION IN JULY

Among the autonomous communities, the Balearic Islands was the primary destination for international tourists in July, welcoming 2,566,441 visitors, with a year-on-year increase of 1%.

Catalonia received a total of 2,352,229 visitors (-1.2%); Andalusia, 1,540,778 (+5.5%); Valencia, 1,494,369 (+1.4%); the Canary Islands, 1,231,090 (+6%); and Madrid, 719,196 (-3.1%).

Other autonomous communities welcomed a total of 1,119,149 foreign travellers in July, reflecting a 2.3% growth compared to the same month in 2024.
