The unemployment rate in Canary Islands has decreased by 873 people during August, representing a decline of 0.58% compared to July. This reduction brings the total number of unemployed individuals in the islands to 150,215 people, the lowest figure since January 2008.
According to data provided by the Canary Islands Government, the number of unemployed has fallen by over 22,000 people since the beginning of the legislature, when unemployment stood at 172,483 people. The Deputy Minister of Employment, Isabel León, noted that the labour market in the Canary Islands has improved year-on-year, with 12,830 more people in work compared to the previous year.
Unemployment Among Older Workers
The decrease in unemployment in August has been particularly noticeable among those aged over 45, a demographic that has seen the registered unemployment rate drop to its lowest level since September 2010. Over the last year, the number of unemployed individuals in this age group has decreased by 7,381 people. The Deputy Minister also highlighted that the number of long-term unemployed has fallen by over 6,000 people in the past year, despite a slight increase of 14 people in August.
Sector-Specific Changes
By sector, unemployment has decreased in all areas except for Industry. The most significant reductions have occurred in hospitality (-276 people) and agriculture (-111 people). Following these are Commerce (-34 people) and Construction (-9 people). Year-on-year, unemployment has receded in all sectors.
Regional Highlights
At the island level, unemployment has fallen across all islands compared to August 2024. The most pronounced percentage declines were recorded in El Hierro (-19.61%), La Gomera (-19.26%) and La Palma (-11.57%). Other islands also experienced decreases: Lanzarote (-8.00%), Gran Canaria (-7.72%), Tenerife (-7.57%) and Fuerteventura (-5.44%).
Contracting Activity
In terms of recruitment, 57,541 new employment agreements were registered in the archipelago during August.
