Unemployment in Lanzarote Falls to 7,077 in August, Marking an 8% Decrease Since 2024

Unemployment in Lanzarote decreased again in August, with 7,077 individuals registered as unemployed. This marks a reduction of 1.6% compared to July (7,189). Year-on-year, the island has recorded a significant drop of 8% in comparison to August 2024.

The President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has positively assessed these figures, asserting they are “the result of the economic stimulation policies we are implementing at the institution, enhancing the most competitive sectors of the island’s economy.”

Betancort also highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration, describing it as crucial for local economic growth. In this context, he pointed to the recently launched campaign Consume Lanzarote, aimed at strengthening local commerce and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises on the island.

Unemployment Snapshot in August

By municipality, Arrecife had the highest number of unemployed individuals on the island, with a total of 3,508. This was followed by San Bartolomé with 871, Teguise with 853, Tías with 742, Yaiza with 550, Tinajo with 290, and Haría with 263.

In terms of gender distribution, women continue to represent the majority of unemployment on the island, with 4,068 registered in August, compared to 3,009 men in a situation of unemployment.

Regarding economic sectors, the “other services” category accounts for the largest volume of unemployment, with 3,189 individuals. This is followed by the hospitality sector (1,637) and retail (1,213). Construction comes next with 486 unemployed, and industry with 210. The agricultural sector maintains low figures, with only 58 people unemployed, while the group of individuals without economic activity reaches 284.

By age, those over 60 constitute the largest number of unemployed on the island, with 1,308 individuals, followed by the 55 to 59 age group (1,249) and the 50 to 54 age group (934). The age groups of 45 to 49 (806), 40 to 44 (704), and 35 to 39 (663) also show high figures. In younger age brackets, there are 628 unemployed between the ages of 30 and 34, 521 between 25 and 29, 311 in the 20 to 24 age range, and 65 under the age of 20.
