The Arrecife City Council is set to launch a new public mobility service featuring electric bicycles. The Municipal Government, headed by Mayor Yonathan de León, has begun deploying nine charging stations in different locations throughout the capital of Lanzarote.
Development of New Regulations
The Department of Transport and Mobility, overseen by Mario González Altube, has published the official tender for drafting new regulations governing this service. These will encompass fiscal criteria for the use of this sustainable, smoke-free, and quiet transport option in the capital. The official tender announcement was made on 27 August.
Today, Mayor Yonathan de León and Councillor Mario González Altube visited one of the electric bike charging stations near the new pedestrian zone by El Reducto beach. They discussed the implementation of this system, designed to bolster municipal public transport by promoting the use of urban buses and bicycles for local travel. Given its coastal location and flat terrain, Arrecife provides numerous advantages for cycling as a mode of urban mobility.
Justification for the Initiative
In the official justifying document regarding the need for this tender and the objectives set by the Arrecife City Council, it is noted that the introduction of an electric bike system represents a committed effort towards sustainable, accessible, and innovative mobility in Arrecife. This service will directly contribute to reducing motor vehicle traffic and pollutant emissions by providing a clean, efficient transport alternative suited to the needs of citizens, particularly in a city with Arrecife’s straightforward geography and short travel distances.
Councillor Mario González has outlined that among the key benefits of this bike system is its ability to integrate with other public transport options, leading to improved air quality, reduced noise pollution, and the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits.
Furthermore, as these are electric bikes, the potential user range is expanded, removing barriers related to physical effort or age. This type of system positions Arrecife as a pioneering municipality within Lanzarote, fostering a modern and responsible image committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while acting as a catalyst for urban transformation, unifying areas, and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Current Developments and Future Opportunities
The Arrecife City Council is finalising the installation of the nine bike charging points and has acquired approximately sixty pedal-assisted electric bikes through a public competition. These initiatives have benefited from the second call of the “Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan – Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.”
The City Council informs that firms or professionals interested in applying for this tender to develop the regulations have until 12 September 2025, at 2 PM to submit their proposals.
