The Governing Council of the Tenerife Island Council has approved a series of initiatives this Wednesday, representing a total investment of over five million euros, notably highlighting an ambitious landscape regeneration project on the TF-1 and the restoration of the Mirador de La Centinela.

Regeneration of the Southern Motorway

The most significant economic measure is the tender for a landscape regeneration project and improvement of road safety on the slopes of the TF-1, near MercaTenerife. The initiative, with a budget of 3.3 million euros and an execution period of eight months, will affect an area of 60,000 square metres on the right side heading south, between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the junction with MercaTenerife.

The island president, Rosa Dávila, accompanied by vice president Lope Afonso, explained at a press conference that this intervention “marks a new step in improving the TF-1 and its surroundings,” complementing a recent investment of 30 million euros in road surface rehabilitation. “We want to ensure that our main roads are in optimal condition for all drivers,” she noted. Dávila emphasised the strategic importance of the area, as it represents the first image of the capital for those entering from the south, and thus the project aims to provide “a more pleasant welcome.”

Restoration of the Mirador de La Centinela

In the heritage sector, the Council has approved the contract file for the restoration of the Mirador de La Centinela, located between the municipalities of San Miguel de Abona and Arona. The works, with a budget of 1.4 million euros and a timeline of nine months, are in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands and both municipalities.

The project aims to enhance this resource with significant heritage potential, situated in an area of unique archaeological and socioeconomic diversity. The intervention includes the comprehensive refurbishment of the property and the installation of an interpretation centre dedicated to the archaeological heritage of the Abona region, with a particular focus on rock art sites.

Grants for LGBTIQA+ Policies

In the social sphere, the Council has approved the call for grants amounting to a total of 60,000 euros aimed at municipalities on the island with fewer than 30,000 inhabitants or dependent public entities. The purpose of these grants is to finance projects that promote sexual, family, and gender diversity policies across the island, specifically advancing LGBTIQA+ public policies.

Conservation of Protected Species

In environmental matters, the public company Gesplan has been authorised to carry out a conservation service for protected and endangered species. This operation, with a budget of 600,000 euros and a validity until November 2028, will focus on recovering species such as the Picopaloma, Pico de El Sauzal, Jarilla de Agache, and the dragos of Tenerife.

Extension of the Cultural Infrastructure Plan

Finally, in the field of Culture and Museums of Tenerife, it has been decided to extend the duration of the Cultural Infrastructure Plan 2016–2028, which will officially be renamed the 2016–2029 Plan. This measure responds to execution difficulties expressed by several municipalities in completing already financed actions. The aim is to allow municipalities to reorganise annual budgets and execute pending projects without the risk of losing funding, thereby ensuring the fulfilment of the plan’s objectives.
