First Edition of AgroFuer Launched by Fuerteventura Cabildo

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has inaugurated the first edition of AgroFuer, which is part of the ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ programme, led by the Tourism Department and financed by the Next Generation EU funds. The fair features around twenty stands, thanks to the involvement of local associations, producers, traders, and artisans.

Promoting Local Economy and Consumption

This initiative is being developed by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, the Tourism Department, and the Chamber of Commerce, through a collaboration agreement aimed at linking the growth of the tourism sector with the development of rural communities.

The goal of AgroFuer is to energise the economy of rural areas and promote the consumption of local products, featuring a comprehensive programme of activities that will extend throughout the weekend. It aims to become a meeting point for the primary sector, local cuisine, and the popular culture of Fuerteventura.

Inaugural Ceremony Attendees

Present at the inaugural event were the island president, Lola García, the Tourism Councillor, Marlene Figueroa, the mayor of Tuineje, Candelaria Umpiérrez, and the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura, Juan Jesús Rodríguez.

President Lola García welcomed the event, stating that it promotes the economy of rural areas and encourages the consumption of local products. “It is a space that brings together our cuisine, craftsmanship, and culture,” she said.

Value of Local Products

Tourism Councillor Marlene Figueroa noted that “AgroFuer is about gastronomy, local products, and craftsmanship, highlighting a tourism sector that should not be solely focused on sun and beach.” She added, “It is celebrated under a collaboration agreement through the Tourism Department and the Sustainable Tourism Plan to ensure that local products are also part of the destination.”

Mayor Candelaria Umpiérrez remarked, “Today we celebrate, with the best products from the island, the hard work of the men and women of the field, the sea, and craftsmanship.”

Furthermore, Juan Jesús Rodríguez Marichal, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura, emphasised that AgroFuer represents an opportunity to stimulate rural economies by harnessing synergies with the tourism sector. “We are convinced that this initiative benefits all sectors,” he added.
