First Edition of AgroFuer Launched in Fuerteventura
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura inaugurated the first edition of AgroFuer on Friday, a fair featuring around twenty stalls aimed at boosting the economy of rural areas and promoting the consumption of locally sourced products.
In a statement, the Insular Institution noted that this event is part of the ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ programme, driven by the Department of Tourism and funded by European Next Generation funds.
Boosting Rural Development
This project is being implemented by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura through the Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, under an agreement to link the growth of the tourism sector with the development of rural communities.
The initiative aims to invigorate the economy of rural areas and encourage the consumption of locally sourced products, featuring a programme of activities that will span the entire weekend, making it a meeting point for the primary sector, gastronomy, and popular culture of Fuerteventura.
Activities and Programme
Activities include workshops aimed at children, a cultural route, concerts, and culinary demonstrations, among other offerings.
Present at the inaugural event were the island president, Lola García; the tourism councillor, Marlene Figueroa; the mayor of Tuineje, Candelaria Umpiérrez; and the president of the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce, Juan Jesús Rodríguez.
Institutional Statements
President Lola García stated that this is “a space that unites our gastronomy, craftsmanship, and culture.”
Figueroa indicated that “AgroFuer showcases gastronomy, local products, and craftsmanship, highlighting a tourism sector that should not be solely focused on sun and sea.”
Valuing Local Products
“This is celebrated within a framework agreement, through the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Sustainability Plan, to ensure that local products are also part of the destination,” added the councillor.
The mayor of Tuineje expressed that this fair features the “best products from the island, showcasing the hard work of the men and women from the fields, sea, and craftsmanship.”
Furthermore, the president of the Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce highlighted that AgroFuer “represents an opportunity to energise rural economies by leveraging synergies with the tourism sector.”
