Canary Islands Government Issues Pre-alert for Dust Storms

Pre-alert Declared for Eastern Islands

The Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has declared a pre-alert situation due to dust storms in the eastern islands, effective from 18:00 on Saturday, 6th September, as reported by the regional Executive in an official statement.

This decision is based on information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other available sources, in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena in the Canary Islands (PEFMA).

Affected Areas

Specifically, the Government indicates that the dust storm will affect the summits, east, south, and west of Gran Canaria, as well as the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

There is a likelihood of elevated dust levels, which could vary in quantity, and its presence cannot be ruled out at mid-elevation or coastal levels. This could reduce visibility and worsen health issues for individuals with chronic and/or respiratory conditions.

Public Advisory

The Canary Islands Government urges the population to follow the self-protection advice provided by the General Directorate of Emergencies.
