The Mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez Martín, has sent an official letter to the Central Government and the management of AENA on the island, offering the council’s collaboration in the cleaning, conservation, and maintenance of the green areas at César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport.

This offer is presented as a temporary measure while the contract for services currently under tender is awarded. With this initiative, the council aims to prevent the deterioration of landscaped areas and ensure that the island’s main entry and exit point maintains an appropriate image.

San Bartolomé Offers to Maintain Green Spaces at Lanzarote Airport

According to the mayor, the current condition of the gardens and green spaces at the airport does not reflect the importance of this strategic infrastructure. Consequently, San Bartolomé is proposing the activation of a municipal work team to manage these tasks until AENA completes the administrative process.

Tourist and Environmental Image at Stake

In his communication, Pérez Martín emphasised that the airport is not merely a transit point for travellers, but also the first impression that any visitor receives upon arriving in Lanzarote. “César Manrique Airport is the primary gateway to the island, and we want to contribute to ensuring that its surroundings are in the best possible condition, both environmentally and aesthetically,” he conveyed in his letter.

Furthermore, the mayor insisted that this gesture is part of an exercise in institutional loyalty and intergovernmental cooperation, convinced that combined efforts benefit both local citizens and the external projection of Lanzarote.

The council also points out that the condition of the gardens and green spaces linked to public infrastructures directly impacts the environmental and scenic quality of the municipality. In the case of the airport, the good state of its facilities has an additional effect on tourists’ perception and the image projected by the island externally, as stated by the local council.

The council emphasises that it has been working for years on policies aimed at reducing the visual impact of urban development on the landscape, and this collaboration with AENA would align with that strategy.
