Themes of Literature and Knowledge
This year, the Book Fair emphasises the connection between literature and knowledge, bearing the slogan ‘Reading is understanding. The act of reading is comprehension. Reading and understanding is living,’ attributed to writer Álvaro Pombo, recipient of the 2024 Cervantes Prize.
This quote is reflected in the poster designed by Peñita Gutiérrez, who holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of La Laguna and has further training in Lisbon and Granada.
Inspiration Behind the Artwork
The artist drew inspiration from the theme of knowledge to develop her final concept. “Clouds, represented as books, release raindrops, symbolising the knowledge that brings life to the inanimate. This is set against the backdrop of confronting the information overload prevalent today due to social media, contrasting it with the culture and awareness that reading provides,” she explained.
Art as a Tool for Social Change
Rayco León, the Councillor for Culture, highlights the contributions of this multidisciplinary artist. He noted that she uses art as a tool for social integration and transformation. Her work spans from murals in socio-educational contexts to illustrations for children’s stories, promoting equality and engaging in live painting alongside musical bands, as well as participating in urban art festivals in the Canary Islands.
The Book Fair is organised by the Insular Library Centre, under the supervision of the Culture Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, with the collaboration of the Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development of the Canary Government.
“The fair reaffirms itself as a space that fosters dialogue between literature, education, and society, solidifying its position as one of the key cultural events in the islands,” the councillor remarked.
