The physiotherapists at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service of Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, affiliated with the Health Department of the Government of the Canary Islands, have conducted nearly fifty thousand treatments throughout 2025, assisting a total of 1,929 patients up to August. Meanwhile, in Primary Care, physiotherapy professionals have completed a total of 13,164 treatments.
The physiotherapy team at Molina Orosa consists of 39 specialised professionals who focus on the functional recovery of patients with neuromuscular diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, injuries, or disabilities that affect mobility and physical function, as well as those recovering from surgical interventions and patients with trauma, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular conditions, among others.
The majority of interventions and treatments by physiotherapists in the hospital setting occur in gyms and physiotherapy rooms, equipped with multiple resources and state-of-the-art equipment. However, some of this work takes place on hospital wards and within the Intensive Care Unit, where daily care is provided to an average of 30 patients with post-surgical trauma or immobility syndrome.
The physiotherapy professionals at Molina Orosa respond to referrals from other specialties and from Primary Care. Most treatments relate to the locomotor system and trauma pathology; furthermore, a significant percentage of interventions are dedicated to recovery post-orthopaedic surgeries.
Additionally, physiotherapists offer essential services in treating spinal deviations, amputations, neurological diseases, and paediatric rehabilitation, as well as supporting the normal development of children.

Close Attention
To bring rehabilitation programmes closer to patients and avoid their transportation to the hospital centre, the physiotherapists at Molina Orosa also carry out their roles at health centres in Valterra, San Bartolomé, and Tías. Indeed, of the total treatments carried out until August, 16,652 have taken place in these healthcare facilities.
Finally, it is pertinent to note that three of the physiotherapists from the service attend the Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes Special Education Centre, where they implement various therapies that enhance the comprehensive development of students with special educational needs.
