San Bartolomé Council Reinforces Commitment to Gender Equality and Violence Prevention Strategies

The Mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, and the Councillor for Equality, Mónica de León, held a coordination meeting on Monday with the island director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, Pedro Viera Espinosa, and the Head of the Gender Violence Unit, Olga María Betancor Tabares. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current situation regarding gender issues and to coordinate efforts for prevention and intervention from the municipal level. Representatives from the Local Police and the Civil Guard also participated in this meeting.

Following the meeting, Mayor Isidro Pérez stated that, “from this Council, we reiterate our firm and absolute commitment against gender violence. Our governing team is dedicated to the correct implementation of measures and to working together with the Security Forces and Corps, as well as with the Island Directorate, to protect women and progress towards a society free from machismo violence.”

According to the institution’s press release, the meeting was part of the Police Coordination Table on gender violence, which also involved representatives from the Local Police of San Bartolomé and the Civil Guard. The meeting focused on analysing recorded cases in the municipality and on monitoring and updating the VioGén protocol, a fundamental tool to ensure the protection of victims.

During the meeting, the importance of the rigorous and up-to-date application of protocols was emphasised, along with the close cooperation between public administrations and security forces, in order to provide a comprehensive and effective response to gender violence.

Councillor for Equality, Mónica de León, emphasised that, in addition to this coordinated work, “the San Bartolomé Council provides an integrated service available to all women in the municipality, offering support in the labour, social, and psychological spheres, with the aim of promoting their autonomy and well-being.”

With such meetings, the San Bartolomé Council reaffirms its commitment to equality, safety, and the defence of women’s rights, advancing in institutional coordination and the continuous improvement of protection and support resources.
