Juan Antonio de la Hoz, a distinguished member of Coalición Canaria, passed away on Tuesday, 9th September. Throughout his career, he held various public roles in the municipality of San Bartolomé and in the broader insular context.
De la Hoz served as deputy mayor of San Bartolomé, and in 2005 he took on the presidency of the local Coalición Canaria committee. He later held the position of Councillor for Heritage at the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
In 2015, he was appointed coordinator of the Insular Education Office of Lanzarote, and more recently, he worked as a teacher at CEIP Ajey in San Bartolomé.
Condolences
Coalición Canaria Lanzarote wishes to express its deepest sorrow at the passing of our colleague and friend Juan Antonio de la Hoz, a political and social reference for the Island, whose career was characterised by his commitment to Lanzarote, the defence of democratic values, and his dedication to public service.
For many years, Juan Antonio fulfilled various responsibilities at the Cabildo of Lanzarote and within the San Bartolomé municipality, leaving an indelible mark in areas such as education, civic engagement, culture, and the Biosphere Reserve.
He was also a brave voice in defence of social rights, the environment, and citizenship, always guided by his firm belief that politics should serve the people.
In addition, he was noted for his strong commitment to Canary Island identity and Canary nationalism—values he passionately and coherently championed throughout his political and personal life. Juan Antonio understood the defence of the Canaries not only as a political project but as a way of life intertwined with the culture, history, and future of our people.
Equally, he actively participated in the Canary Association of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, strongly advocating for the right to self-determination of Western Sahara and continuously expressing solidarity with just causes beyond our borders.
On behalf of the entire nationalist family, the Secretary General of Coalición Canaria Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, extends heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
“Today we lose a loyal colleague and an unwavering fighter for Lanzarote. His legacy will live on in our organisation and in the memories of all those who shared work, projects, and dreams with him for this island. May he rest in peace,” stated Pedro San Ginés.
Coalición Canaria Lanzarote stands in solidarity with his loved ones and acknowledges the figure of Juan Antonio de la Hoz, who will always be remembered with respect, affection, and gratitude.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote expresses its deepest sorrow at the passing of Juan Antonio de la Hoz González, who served as Councillor for Historic Heritage and the Biosphere Reserve—among other areas—during the 2011-2015 term.
The President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, commented, “The loss of Juan Antonio de la Hoz creates a void as he was a committed man to Lanzarote, its people, and the values of Canary nationalism. His work for heritage, education, and social justice will remain in collective memory.”
Furthermore, he actively took part in the Canary Association of Solidarity with the Sahrawi people, noted for his advocacy of self-determination for Western Sahara.
De la Hoz was a staunch defender of administrative decentralisation and self-government, consistently underscoring the importance of cabildos and town councils as institutions close to the citizenry. His voice resonated in numerous local debates and civic participation processes.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote conveys its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Juan Antonio de la Hoz González, recognising his legacy and dedication to the Lanzarote society.
