The politics and public administration of Lanzarote are in mourning following the passing of Juan Antonio de la Hoz González, former councillor for Historical Heritage and Biosphere Reserve at the Cabildo de Lanzarote from 2011 to 2015.
Juan Antonio de la Hoz, a prominent figure in Lanzarote nationalism, was recognised for his commitment to the defence of heritage, the environment, and education, as well as his activism for the Sahrawi cause. He was also well-known for his opposition to oil exploration near the Canary Islands.
De la Hoz served as the president of the Local Committee of Coalición Canaria in San Bartolomé and was a councillor in the same municipality. He also worked as a technical coordinator for the Insular Education Office, participating in programmes that promoted environmental education and awareness among the local population.

On the same day, the Cabildo de Lanzarote expressed its sorrow over the death of Adolfo Mingo Serrano, who served as the institution’s treasurer for four decades, from 1961 to 2001. Recognised for his professionalism and for leaving a lasting impact on local administration, Mingo passed away at the age of 91.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, extended his condolences to Mingo’s family and friends, highlighting his dedication and commitment: “Mr Adolfo Mingo devoted much of his life to public service with honesty and diligence. His work and example will always be remembered by those who had the fortune to share their professional journey with him.”
