The Cabildo Announces Tender for Restoration Works at the Mirador de la Centinela for €1.4 Million

Rosa Dávila Highlights the Project as a Socioeconomic and Cultural Development Opportunity for the Midlands

The Cabildo of Tenerife has approved the tender document for the restoration and rehabilitation works at the Mirador de la Centinela, located between the municipalities of San Miguel and Arona. The project represents an investment of €1.4 million and is expected to be completed within a period of nine months.

The President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, noted that the restoration of the viewpoint presents a chance for socioeconomic development in the midlands, generating employment and fostering the involvement of qualified professionals in archaeology and heritage management. “Today we can proudly say that we are closer to restoring La Centinela to its deserved status: a cultural, scenic, and social reference that connects past and present, memory and identity, knowledge and development.”

The rehabilitation of the Mirador de la Centinela marks a long-awaited initiative and benefits from collaboration between the Government of the Canary Islands and the municipalities of San Miguel de Abona and Arona.

The rehabilitation project aims to enhance and activate a resource that holds significant potential, both from a heritage perspective due to its location within the area of greatest archaeological uniqueness and diversity on the island, and from a socioeconomic standpoint. The initiative includes the complete renovation of the property and the establishment of a visitor centre on its lower floor, linked to the archaeological heritage of the Abona region, particularly concerning the rock art sites.

The strategic lines outlined in the project aim to promote the knowledge and value of the archaeological heritage in southern Tenerife, improve the conservation of archaeological sites by establishing management mechanisms that enhance public access, enrich the cultural tourism offerings in the southern region, create educational resources for schools and society at large, and contribute to the socioeconomic development of the midlands while generating employment opportunities, including qualified positions related to archaeology.
