Urgent Measures Needed for Fuerteventura Airport

The spokesperson for Coalición Canaria in Congress, Cristina Valido, has called on the Ministry of the Interior to implement urgent measures to prevent the long waits at passport controls at Fuerteventura Airport, especially with the peak tourist season approaching in October. Valido is demanding reinforcements at the passport control in Fuerteventura to avoid further queues during this busy time.

Valido warned that congestion at access points is no longer limited to the peak months and that the reinforcements promised by the Ministry are still insufficient. In her view, the lack of planning regarding personnel allocation, combined with Aena’s management of flight scheduling, is responsible for the queues, leading to discomfort among travellers and projecting a negative image of the Canary Islands in key markets such as Britain.

The MP reminded that these incidents are not isolated cases and, despite the commitments made by the State at the end of 2024, the problems continue. Therefore, she has requested specific explanations from Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska regarding what measures he intends to implement in the coming months to ensure smooth operations at the islands’ airports.

Furthermore, she emphasised that the Canary Islands have the right to participate in the planning and management of their airport infrastructure, as outlined in the Statute of Autonomy and the Canary Agenda. She stressed that the airports in the archipelago should not receive the same treatment as those on the mainland, as they serve as the primary entry and exit points for residents and visitors.

Valido concluded that she will continue to raise this concern in Congress while the situation persists, as she believes that poor airport functionality poses a direct risk to the economy and tourism of Fuerteventura and the islands as a whole.
