Meeting on Telecommunications Infrastructure in Antigua
The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, Óscar López; the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres; and the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, Antonio Hernando, met today in Madrid with Matías Peña, Mayor of Antigua, and Patrick Farges, CEO of the telecommunications infrastructure company TOTEM. The purpose of the meeting was to mediate between both parties regarding the new site that will support the telecommunications antennas for the municipality of Antigua, Fuerteventura. This will enable the more than 14,800 residents of the area to regain mobile coverage.
The original site where the antennas were located stopped operating weeks ago following the termination of the rental contract by the property owner. During this time, the town of Antigua lost mobile coverage, as this was the only infrastructure of its kind in the locality.
Agreement on Alternative Locations
Following the meeting and after considering various locations that would ensure the service level of the original site, both parties have agreed to halt the implementation of this infrastructure at the original site. They will also explore alternative locations that do not cause inconvenience to the residents.
“We will always contribute to finding the necessary solutions so that citizens and businesses can access the benefits of the digital society, regardless of where they live,” stated Óscar López. He also highlighted the significant investments made by the Spanish Government for digital transformation in the Canary Islands: “Since 2018, we have invested approximately 100 million euros through various calls to improve connectivity for the people, institutions, and businesses of the Canary Islands. These investments directly impact the well-being of individuals and the boost of the local economy.”
Positive Evaluation of the Agreement
For his part, Minister Torres positively assessed the agreement reached. “We have responded to the request made by the Mayor of Antigua, and we are pleased to have found a common position in the interest of all,” he indicated. “The antenna will be located in the most suitable place for the residents and the operator, which is great news,” concluded the minister, who underscored the importance of dialogue as “a hallmark of this Government.”
