Lanzarote’s Security and Emergency Consortium Works to Mitigate Ecosystem Impact
The Cabildo of Lanzarote has activated the Insular Emergency Plan in a state of pre-emergency due to marine pollution caused by a ship that ran aground on the coast of Órzola on Wednesday morning.
According to the document, the condition of the vessel and the grounding area poses a serious and imminent risk to marine biodiversity, public health, and coastal economic activities, including fishing and tourism.
The Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, in collaboration with environmental technicians and in constant communication with the Haría Town Council, has been working throughout the morning to minimise any potential damage to the ecosystem.
With the PEIN activated in a state of pre-emergency, the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium is undertaking all necessary procedures to remove the vessel from the bay of Órzola as soon as possible. This document aims to ensure the protection of biodiversity and the coastal ecosystem in the northern part of the island at all times.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote will continue to provide updates on this incident through official channels, including any changes regarding the situation.
