Canary Islands Government Issues Emergency Alert Following Maritime Pollution Incident

The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has updated the situation regarding the Territorial Civil Protection Emergency Plan for the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA) on Wednesday, 10 September. The plan has moved from pre-alert to alert status from 6:00 PM due to a marine pollution incident on the island of Lanzarote.

Incident Details

The situation arose from the grounding and subsequent fire of a fishing vessel in a shallow area near Órzola. As a result, a spill occurred in the sea, leading to the activation of the National Maritime Plan, initially in alert phase and later in emergency phase, level 1, from 3:30 PM.

Area Affected

The affected area corresponds to the coastline of the municipality of Haría, where efforts to manage and assess the extent of the pollution are already underway.

Authorities’ Response

The authorities stress the importance of monitoring the situation closely as they coordinate actions among various administrations to mitigate potential environmental damage along the northern coast of Lanzarote.
