The Tenerife Council has confirmed that the fire at the Insular Solid Waste Plant (PIRS), located in the municipality of Arico, has been extinguished. The fire affected an area of 200 metres. According to a statement from the Council of Tenerife, the materials burnt included bales of already recycled cardboard and plastic.
Following the extinguishing of the fire, the President of the Tenerife Council, Rosa Dávila, expressed her gratitude to the emergency teams “for caring for and protecting the heart” of the insular waste plant, noting that “the material damage could have been much worse.”
Emergency services included firefighters from the Consortium, who deployed a total of six Heavy Urban Pumps (BUP), five Urban Water Tanks (BUN), as well as a command and control unit, a personnel and logistics unit, and a self-storage unit.
Firefighters from Granadilla, Güímar, Guía de Isora, and Adeje were also on-site, alongside Forest Brigades, officers from the Civil Guard, the Local Police, Civil Protection, a preventive resource from the SUC, and CECOPIN.
Finally, the insular Councillor for Natural Environment, Safety, and Emergency Services, Blanca Pérez, stated that “now is the time to work to recover the area affected by the flames, while allowing the Civil Guard to conduct the necessary investigations” to determine the cause of the fire.
Work at the plant has resumed this Friday “in total normality”, while maintaining vigilance for any possible smouldering.
