Agüimes Launches Energy Community Project
Municipal Initiative for Renewable Energy
The Agüimes Town Council has announced today the launch of the Villa de Agüimes Gran Canaria Energy Community (Cevagc). This municipal initiative aims to generate, store, and consume renewable energy, allowing “residents, businesses, and entities to produce their own solar energy.” It is expected to save up to 60% on energy bills, as individuals will be able to generate their own solar power and share any excess, according to a statement released by the Town Council.
Project Overview
The project was introduced by Agüimes Mayor Óscar Hernández alongside Raúl García Brink, the Councillor for Environment, Climate, Energy, and Knowledge of the Gran Canaria Cabildo. The initiative plans to install photovoltaic panels on the roofs of both public and private buildings.
This will enable the generation of renewable energy, which can be distributed among nearby homes and businesses that join the network.
Financial Benefits
The Town Council outlined that the anticipated savings on electricity bills could range between 30% and 60%, “depending on consumption habits and the number of household members,” as stated in the announcement.
Currently, there are 25 photovoltaic installations planned across the municipality, of which nine will be located on private buildings and 16 on public infrastructure.
Environmental Impact
The clean energy generated by this network could benefit nearly 800 households in the municipality, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
Open Access for New Users
Finally, the Town Council has confirmed that access to the Energy Community is “open and free” for new users, including residents, shops, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), municipal facilities, and industries.
Interested parties can join the electricity network as consumers for an annual fee of 100 euros. They can also lease the non-accessible roofs of their buildings for solar panel installation. For more information, the Town Council advises visiting the official website.
