The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Works and Machinery Department, has commenced a refurbishment process at the La Oliva Biological Station. This initiative is part of the ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ programme, described by the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, as “an ambitious scheme for the conservation and enhancement of every corner of the island.” The La Oliva Biological Station begins a comprehensive refurbishment process
The councillor for Works and Machinery, Blas Acosta, explains that the ‘Beautiful’ programme also includes cleaning and clearing actions in natural spaces, alongside minor construction works that significantly improve the quality of places like the La Oliva Biological Station.
The La Oliva Biological Station serves as a centre for the recovery of native flora and wildlife, and is equipped with additional facilities such as a necropsy room and an educational classroom.
The refurbishment works will take place within the existing La Oliva Biological Station, specifically in the car park, the area adjacent to the storage facility, the open space near the white tamarisk, and the display area of the Canarian Garden.
Main Planned Works
The main actions planned include three key initiatives:
- Installation of shaded areas: To enhance user comfort, the area will be upgraded and pergolas will be installed.
- Creation of an accessible pathway: An accessible pathway will be constructed from the Canarian Garden to the Nature Classroom, involving ground levelling and adjustments to minimise existing slopes, ensuring a stable base for future paving. This surface will be designed to allow for comfortable transit, particularly for those with reduced mobility.
- Preparation of a new car park area: Prior works will include cleaning and removing all stored items from the space adjacent to the storage facility. After clearing the area, the terrain will be levelled to eliminate any unevenness. Following this, filling and compacting of the ground will be carried out using granular materials.
The ‘Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature’ initiative, overseen by Blas Acosta’s department, involves activities over a 15-month period from 2024 to 2025. During these years, a total investment of four million euros will be allocated to nearly a hundred “local actions” directly impacting environmental conservation, visitor perceptions, and the quality of life for residents.
