The Cabildo de Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente, hosted the first Awareness Day on Childhood Cancer this Friday. The event brought together healthcare professionals, affected families, and institutional representatives in the assembly hall of the island corporation.
Purpose of the Event
The aim of this gathering was to create a space for training, reflection, and awareness regarding the impact of childhood cancer on society, with a particular emphasis on the role of women as primary caregivers during the illness process.

During the opening of the event, the Councillor for Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, emphasised the significance of this inaugural gathering: “It has been a day not only of awareness but also of training and, above all, of recognising the vital role of women as primary caregivers and supporters during the illness process. We want to establish this meeting as a reference point in the coming years.”
José Jerez, President of the Fundación Canaria Pequeño Valiente, also noted the positive reception of the event in Lanzarote and thanked the Cabildo for their support of initiatives like Casa Pipa in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which facilitates transportation and accommodation for families during medical treatments.

The day included presentations by healthcare professionals, testimonies from families, and the screening of the documentary *Camino Vital*, which documents the experiences of young people from the Foundation on the Camino de Santiago. Medical, emotional, and social aspects related to childhood cancer were also discussed, highlighting blood and bone marrow donation as vital and compassionate acts.
